Organizers of a new AAU basketball league in Selma are hoping to get a shot in the arm through an upcoming fundraiser.
The program, called Buckets for Bucks, will be held March 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Concordia College.
The object of the event, league organizer Roosevelt Johnson said, is to get local businesses and supporters to sponsor a player from the league. On the day of the event, the player will shoot three-pointers for 60 seconds. For every basket made, the sponsors will donate $5.
The money, Johnson said, will help with travel expenses for the players.
“We want our players to be able to go to tournaments and get that experience.”
The league, Johnson said, is being organized through New Selmont Baptist Church with help from pastor David Perry.
Tryouts for the league begin April 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. for 7 and 8 year olds, April 5 for 9 and 10 year olds, April 6 for 11 and 12 year olds, April 7 for 13 and 14 year olds and April 8 for 15 and 16 year olds. Tryouts will be held April 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. for 17 and 18 year olds.
The draft will be held April 7 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 7 and 8 year olds and 7 to 8 p.m. for 9 and 10 year olds.
Tryouts continue April 12 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 11 and 12 year olds and 7 to 8 p.m. for 13 and 14 year olds.
They conclude April 13 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 15 and 16 year olds and 7 to 8 p.m. for 17 and 18 year olds.
The league offers programs for boys and girls and Johnson said everyone that tries out will be placed on a team.
