It’s been almost a month since teams for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life-Dallas County first met to discuss fundraising plans for the Relay set for April 29.

With 25 teams, ranging from businesses to schools, already registered, the fight to end a disease that “has no borders” continues.

Veronica Brown, co-chairman for Relay for Life-Dallas County, said every team has different fundraising projects.

“It’s a working phase,” Brown said. “Committees are getting teams registered and ordering shirts for our next meeting this week.”

Brown sits on an 11-member team for Wallace Community College-Selma. The team is sponsoring several faculty and staff versus student basketball games in the near future to reach a $10,000 goal for the cause.

Elementary and high schools are also getting involved.

The Knox Elementary School team, headed by reading coach Tracey Parker, said teachers, staff and students are doing their part.

“The faculty member who raises the most money will get a free lunch period and a substitute to teach his or her class,” Parker said. “The classroom that sells the most moon and stars will have a pizza or ice cream party and a movie.”

Parker said the cause is close to the school’s heart.

“We have an embedded interest in this because we lost a student and a faculty member to cancer,” Parker said. “We’re doing this in remembrance of them.”

Selma High School team captain, Alisa Smiley-Simpson, said teachers, students and organizations, such as the student government association and Future Business Leaders of America, are passing out fliers and selling moon and star donation cards with names of those affected by cancer.

Adrian Moppins, cancer survivor and Wal-Mart associate, plans to raise nearly $700 for her team and, depending on the number of associates who volunteer, the store will match donations up to $3,000.

“I’m working with associates from the register, electronics, bakery and automotive departments,” Moppins said. “People are giving me cakes and other goods for my cookout planned for March 18 and 19 in front of the store. I’ve been sending out letters and getting positive responses.”

Moppins is also selling tickets to raise money. Customers who purchase tickets can have a chance to win a 32-inch television during a drawing to be held April 9.

There is still time for teams to participate. Visit www.relayforlife.org/dallasal to register your team. The next team captain meeting will be March 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanders Technology Building.
