The process to fill the vacant Selma city council position, left open when Dr. Monica Newton and her family moved, is well under way.

Tuesday marked the first day interested candidates could begin registering for the May 24 special election with the Selma City Clerks office.

The final day for candidates to qualify is April 8, while the final day to register to vote is very likely May 14. The Dallas County Board of Registrars is coordinating the voter registration efforts.

As of Tuesday at 11 a.m. the only person who has filed qualifying paperwork is Tom Headley.
