Spring weather sparks successful tournament

The early spring weather set the stage for the largest field ever in the Selma County Club’s fourth annual three-man scramble tournament.

SCC golf pro Tommy Burns said the weather couldn’t have been better for the tournament, which hosted 129 players and 44 teams from across the state.

“The weather was great and the course was really good,” Burns said.  “The early spring really helped make the course look beautiful this year.”

Robby Cotton, McGowin Miller and Steve Anderson claimed the top spot in the Championship flight, posting a 32-under par score for the two-day tournament.

Andy Stewart, Paul Garner and David Cothran took second place in the championship flight with a 29-under score.

“It was a really good event,” said Burns.

“With the turnout we had this year, it was a great time. There was a lot of work done to prepare for the tournament, so we are glad that it turned out as well as it did.”

The tournament played out over two days, with shotgun starts in both the morning and the evening.The first set of golfers began at 9 a.m. on both days and the players played in groups of six across the course.

The winners of the second flight were Beanny Thorton, Bobby Gillispie and Joshua Moore at 21-under par. Third flight winners were Bubba Martin, Calvin Perryman and Mark Smith and fourth flight winners were Don, Tom and Maurice Fitzgerald.
