Two 19-year-old men broke into a Woodrow Avenue home Wednesday morning. The result of their actions sent one to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the midsection and the other to jail.

Shortly after 10 a.m., the two suspects kicked in the side door of a home on the 700 block of Woodrow Avenue, where they found the homeowner standing there with a semi-automatic handgun in hand.

The homeowner opened fire, striking the first suspect in the midsection. The second suspect ran.

According to Selma Chief of Police William Riley, Edward Bell was struck in the midsection and was taken to the hospital where he went through surgery. Riley said late Wednesday, Bell had come out of surgery fine but will remain in the hospital.

The other suspect, 19-year-old Wilber Gray turned himself in to authorities later in the day and has been charged with second-degree burglary. He is being held at the Dallas County Jail. Information on his bond was not available.

“The homeowner had every right to do what he did and he acted exactly how I would expect anyone else if confronted with the same situation,” Riley said.

There were no other details available on the latest condition of Bell. Riley said any charges that may be filed on Bell will wait until he has improved and is released from the hospital.
