Did you ever sit back and wonder just what the $12 million bond approved by voters in Selma October 2009 meant for the city? If you did, then you will have a chance to see some of the equipment purchased by the issue when the City of Selma hosts the City Department Expo Thursday at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.
The Expo, which will be held from 5-7 p.m., will give residents the chance to see some of the equipment purchased by the police and fire department and to meet and question the heads of any of the city’s departments.
“This is a great opportunity for residents to meet someone from the public works department, information technology department, any department and ask any question they may have wanted to ask,” Selma Mayor George Evans said.
Evans said the evening is designed to give greater access to residents to the departments and people they may want to meet.
“We will also have some of the equipment the bond issue allowed us to purchase for our departments,” Evans said. “Sometimes people may not know exactly what the money went for.”
He also mentioned one of the final projects funded by the bond issue, repaving a portion of J.L. Chestnut Jr. Avenue, will be bid out shortly.
“The work done on the streets has really been something,” Evans said. “What they’ve done on First Avenue and Marie Foster has been amazing.”
He also mentioned the work at Bloch Park and Memorial Stadium, also funded by the bond issue, should be completed soon and officials are planning a reopening event for later this month.
Thursday’s Expo is free of charge and open to the public.
