VALLEY GRANDE — When “play ball” was first yelled at Valley Grande’s new baseball fields Friday evening, they were spoken to a full crowd.
“I got a call at the restaurant Friday night from (Dallas County Sheriff’s Department) Sgt. John Hatfield and he said they had taken up all of the parking,” Valley Grande mayor Tom Lee said. “It was like an Independence Day celebration out there. That kind of reaction and attendance makes all the work worth it.”
Friday evening was the first night of games, with Tee Ball teams facing off, but Saturday was the official opening of the fields.
A ribbon cutting was held at the field at 9 a.m. before Valley Grande teams faced off against Mabry.
“I believe all of our teams were able to win,” Lee said. “That’s a great start for these new fields. We have yet to get on the large field, but a lot of hard work has gone into getting all of these fields ready. It’s great to have the fields being used now.”
Last Monday, the Valley Grande City Council’s meeting was shortened due to severe weather in the area keeping people on the agenda from coming to speak.
“We were supposed to have Chris Matthews come to talk about the sewage situation at Overlook Hills,” Lee said. “Because of the weather, he wasn’t able to show, so he will be at the next meeting.”
Valley Grande’s next council meeting is set for Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m.
