Volleyball signees bring versatility

Local and versatile talent highlighted Wallace Community College’s 2011 volleyball signing class. Six signees gathered in the gym Friday afternoon to sign on the dotted line making their fall plans official for head coach April Harper.
The signeees, which include Kayla Kaldor, Dee Griffin, Rachel Eggert, April Clark, Africa Tyler and Brittany Sanders, offer something few players statewide bring, Harper said.
“These girls can play anywhere on the court,” she said. “That’s one of the things we were looking for. They are interchangeable and very talented.”
An added bonus, Harper said, is the big-game experience the players from Morgan Academy’s state championship teams bring.
“They have played on a bog stage so they have been there,’ she said. “They won’t be intimidated. They’ll be able to step right in and help us out.”
The class, Harper said, has the best kind of talent there is — local talent.
“We always try to give the local girls a chance in volleyball and basketball,” she said. “This is such a talent-rich area. We can recruit very well without even leaving the county.”
Many of the girls have played together since they were in junior high school, Harper said, which will also help ease them into the college game.
This, along with their strong support systems, are a huge bonus.
“We are excited to see that family support here,” she said. “It’s truly incredible. We’re excited and can’t wait to see the stands packed for our games.”
