Recent reports say more than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs. A take back event is set for April 30 in Selma for residents to properly dispose of unwanted and no longer needed prescription medications.

On April 30, the Selma Police Department will again partner with the Drug Enforcement Agency for a national Take Back Day.

According to the U.S Department of Justice, the first event last fall was an overwhelming success.

To continue the momentum, the event will again take place April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for those who missed the first event or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of them,” a release from the Department of Justice said.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  More than 7 million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

During the April event, residents of Selma will have two choices as to where they can drop off their prescription drugs.

The Selma Police Department will have a drop off at the department’s downtown headquarters, 1300 Alabama Ave., and another at the Central Alabama Fairgrounds at 2407 Dallas Ave.
