MONTGOMERY — At stake Tuesday in Montgomery at the 2011 Alabama Independent School Association state championships were 10 individual titles, four doubles championships and two team championships.

The Morgan Academy tennis teams came back with 12 of those, including both the boys state championship title and the girls state championship title.

“We had two days where we came together and played some good tennis,” Morgan Academy tennis coach Baxter Stinson said. “It’s a pretty good feeling to have accomplished this goal we set out for ourselves at the beginning of the season.”

The Lady Senators completely swept the girls division, winning each of the five single championships and both doubles championships. Morgan easily defeated Fort Dale Academy in the overall standings to earn their first state tennis championship since they shared the title in 2008.

Caroline Sherrer claimed the No. 1 seed title, while Shelby Moore took the No. 2 title. Sarah Reeves won the No. 4 seed championship with Catherine Armstrong claiming the No. 5 title.

Caroline Sherrer and Reeves combined to win the No. 1 doubles title, with Rachel Sherrer and Moore winning the No. 2 doubles title.

Things were not so easy on the boys side as the Morgan boys had to win both of the doubles championships to pull out the team win.

After the singles portion of the championship, Morgan trailed Glenwood by one overall point, and had to face Glenwood in both of the doubles matches. So, Baxter said, splitting the two matches was not an option.

“We had to win them to win the title,” Stinson said. “It was fun, I can tell you that.”

The No. 2 doubles matchup between Morgan and Glenwood, which featured Morgan’s Hain Beers and MaCain Levins, would finish first, but would go to a decisive third set. Beers and Levins, after losing the opening set of their match, would recover and pull out the victory with a 6-3 score in the final set.

With that match out of the way, Morgan had to win the No. 1 doubles match to secure the championship. Again, like in the No. 2 doubles, Morgan, who was represented by Reed Stewart and Jody Glover, would drop the first set, but would come back and win the final two sets 6-4, 6-3 over Glenwood to win the match, win the No. 1 doubles title and clinch the championship for Morgan.

Glover also won the No. 2 singles championship, while Morgan’s Kyle Stewart won the No. 5 single title.

Beers fell to his Glenwood opponent in the No. 3 singles title, but did bounce back to help win the No. 2 doubles title. Glenwood finished a close second in the boy’s championship race, with Fort Dale Academy coming in third.

This is the first  tennis state championship since 1999.
