Griffin Street fire may be arson

A fire call in the early Monday morning hours is under investigation as an arson case.

The Selma Fire Department, Chief Mike Stokes said, responded to a call at 1403 Griffin Ave. at 3:04 a.m., arriving on the scene at 3:08, where they encountered a fully involved structure.

The circumstances surrounding the fire, Stokes said, raised suspicion of arson.

“There was no power or gas to the building,” he said.

Exposure damage was also reported to a storage shed at 1300 Green St., Stokes said.

The department cleared the scene at 4:55 a.m.

The Selma Police Department filed an arson report and Stokes said the State Fire Marshall’s Office would be called in to investigate if necessary.

The quick response time, which had the department on the scene in four minutes, likely helped keep the fire from burning out of control and causing further damage in the area, Stokes said.

“That was a pretty good response time especially coming from a dead sleep at that time,” he said. “To be awakened from a dead sleep, be dressed and gone in less than four minutes is pretty good.”

Another fire on County Road 17 also kept the department busy over the weekend. At 12:59 a.m. on April 17, the department was called to another structure fire at 399 County Road 17, arriving on the scene at 1:06 a.m., to find a house fully involved.

A mobile home, Stokes said, was fully involved in the fire, which resulted in a total loss.

The department cleared the scene at 2:43 a.m.

Stokes said the suspected cause of the fire is unknown at the moment.
