On a day when the Selma High School softball team welcomed their arch-rivals to campus it was Mother Nature who had the final say.

The Lady Saint Senior Day celebration featured a furious comeback in the final inning that saw them close the gap from four runs down to tie the game at 17-17. That rally was cut short when the skies opened up.

With runners on second and third and two outs, it appeared as if Selma had Southside on the ropes.

Unfortunately, head coach Morgan Boyd said, it was not to be.

“We fought back and the girls played hard,” he said.  “It looked like we were going to pull it out. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had different plans.”

Though they did not pull out the win to end the season, Boyd said he is proud of the way the girls played.

“They never quit,” he said. “And I’m proud of them for that. They never quit fighting.”

The Lady Saints bid farewell to senior players Neokee Clay, Tyler Seay and Melanie Gray.

The seniors, Boyd said, will be missed.

“They have been great,” he said. “They were leaders on this team and we’ll miss them.”
