With photo finishes, records broken and a new champion crowned, the AISA state track finals meet had it all.
In the end, the boys and girls teams from Lee-Scott Academy both claimed state titles.
“I’m just really proud of these kids and coaches,” Lee-Scott track coach Franklin Smith said. “I know that track is an individual sport, but these kids really run well as a team and that is why we were able to do this.”
The girls side took first place with 165 points overall, with the Morgan Academy girls team placing second with 117 points and Prattville Christian School at third with 82 points.
“We ran smoother today,” Morgan track coach Rob Robertson said. “We didn’t have a chance to beat Lee-Scott today, but I was really pleased with how we did in the races.”
Lee-Scott’s boy’s team took first with 108. Tuscaloosa Academy finished second with 101 points.
Springwood School placed third with 50 points.
“Our boys team has improved greatly,” Smith said. “We have been trying to get better and better. It paid off this time.”
Two records were also broken during the meet Thursday.
Escambia Academy’s Jaylen Henry jumped a record 21-feet in the long jump.
Morgan Academy’s Rachel Gomes beat her own record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.2.
Gomes finished the day with the most overall points on the girl’s side with 38 points.
“Rachel has been great for us since she has been here,” Robinson said. “Today shows how good of an athlete she is.”
Tuscaloosa Academy’s Koen Burt finished first with a total of 41 points.
“I was just really pleased with the whole event,” Robinson, who served as tournament director, said. “We had a great day today. The finals day is the easiest meet of the season, but things went about as well as could be expected.”
