The final day the city of Selma will accept applications for the Summer Youth Employment program is drawing near.

Monday, April 25 will mark the final day prospective employees can put their name in the hat for summer jobs.

The deadline, Selma Mayor George Evans said, was actually extended because of the holiday weekend.

“We added one more day at the end because of Good Friday,” he said. “So Monday will be the last day they can come by and get applications.”

To participate in the program, applicants must be a resident of Selma and between the ages of 15 and 22. The program begins June 7 and ends July 14.

Applications will be available Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Selma City Hall, 222 Broad St.

Applications, Evans said, are only step one toward getting a job through the program. Applicants must also show up for a lottery drawing, which will be announced at a later date, to be awarded a job.

“It’s very important that they show up,” he said. “Because if they aren’t there and their name is called, they won’t be given the job.”

The program, Evans said, is always looking for additional sponsors.

The cost of sponsoring an individual in the program is $750. However, Evans said they welcome donations from citizens or businesses of any amount because they can quickly add up.

“If we have people donating $50 or $100 it can make a difference,” he said. “If you get enough of those it can add up and lead to more openings.”
