Former University of Alabama quarterback Tyler Watts and the reigning Miss University of Alabama, Valerie Stewart will headline the Dallas–Wilcox Bama Club’s annual meeting May 3, 6 p.m. at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.
The Dallas County chapter of the club with its 110 members accepts both University of Alabama alumni and Bama fans alike, and has been meeting annually for more than 30 years. It was merged with the Wilcox County club in the mid-90s. The club awards scholarships each year to students who plan to attend the University of Alabama.
“We will be giving our 13 $1,000 scholarships to area high school seniors at our meeting,” said chapter president Ronnie Leet. “Valerie was one of our 2008 scholarship recipients so she has a good tie to our Bama Club.”
The scholarships are the Sam Earle Hobbs Endowed Scholarship; the Blackbelt Endowed Scholarship; the Sterling Price Rainer Memorial Endowed Scholarship; the Betty Jean Perkins McKelvey Memorial Endowed Scholarship; the Doris and Henry Plant Memorial Endowed Scholarship; and the David E. Roberts, Jr. and Rebecca McKinney Roberts Endowed Scholarship.
Family members with UA ties originally funded the scholarships, but anyone can contribute to the scholarship fund directly or through the purchase of University of Alabama license plates.
Watts was a Freshman All SEC, team captain for two years and four-time Academic All SEC. In 1999 during his freshman year at UA Watts came in as quarterback for the trailing Tide in the third quarter against Auburn and led his team to their first victory in Jordan Hare Stadium. Watts is now co-host of the Crimson Tide Postgame Party, which airs after each Tide football game.
While tickets will be available at the door, there is still time to reserve your spot by the April 27 deadline. Tickets are $20 per person for Club members, or $30 per person for non-members. Tickets can be purchased by mailing a check to P.O. Box 2395, Selma 36702 or calling (334) 875-2672.
