Starting at 8 a.m., citizens of Selma will have a chance to participate in yet another event to help keep Selma beautiful.
Because of the holiday weekend, the city will use its citywide cleanup efforts to target one ward, Selma Mayor George Evans said.
“Because of the Mother’s Day weekend there will be a lot of people who can’t make it so we are going to concentrate on one area,” he said. “This time we are going to focus on Ward 7.”
During the January event, more than 100 people showed up to help. The city is hoping when they gather in front of the Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center Saturday morning there will be a similar response.
Evans encouraged residents of the city not to wait for cleanup days to keep their streets litter-free.
“The litter is really one of the biggest problems we are having,” he said. “We would eventually like to see the streets nominate a captain to keep an eye on litter and organize cleanups. That would help tremendously.”
Evans said the city has a committee to check thoroughfares, but he would like to see citizens organize and hold periodic cleanups so the problem does not get out of hand.
