Selma alcohol ordinance changes may happen

It appears the process of changing Selma’s alcohol ordinance may be moving forward after all.
During the Selma City Council’s final meeting in April, a proposal by Selma Dallas Prevention Collaborative and the Cahaba Center for Mental Health would extend the distance between any future school vendor and any school to 500 yards.
“During the meeting, I assigned the issue to the Public Safety committee who did pass the matter on to (Selma city attorney) Jimmy Nunn,” Selma councilmember Corey Bowie said Monday. “We’ve asked attorney Nunn to work out the details of changing the ordinance and then report back to the council.”
Bowie said the matter did not appear on the publicly released agenda for Tuesday evening’s council meeting, but does appear on Nunn’s agenda of items to report to the council.
The Times-Journal incorrectly reported the issue was turned over to the council’s administrative committee chaired by city councilwoman Angela Benjamin. Bowie chairs the council’s public safety committee.
“We plan to meet with the group very soon, showing them the proposed changes to the ordinance and work this out,” Bowie said Monday.
Currently, the city mandates “no liquors or alcoholic beverages shall be sold for consumption on the premises within 200 feet of any church, or within 300 feet of any school.”
The requested change would extend the distance between any future alcohol vendor and any school to 500 yards.
The city council’s meeting Tuesday will be held at city hall in the council chambers beginning at 5 p.m. A work session by the council will be held beginning at 4 p.m. also in the council chambers.
