Senators at full strength

With baseball season over, Morgan Academy head football coach Brian King finally has his team at full strength.
The nine players who were shining on the diamond have traded their gloves for helmets and shoulder pads, which is giving the head coach a more accurate look at what his team will look like when fall drills begin.
Already, King said several players on the team have turned the corner.
“It’s been great,” he said. “The team has come a long way and the guys are picking up on things a lot faster than I thought.”
King said they have been able to put in most of the offensive and defensive schemes they will use because many of the returning players were already familiar with the calls and alignments.
The team will get its first true test Tuesday when they travel to Greenville for a scrimmage with defending state AAA champion Fort Dale at 4:45 p.m. The two teams, King said, are familiar with each other and often schedule scrimmages together.
“We usually do this in spring and preseason because we know each other so well and we know what we want to get done out there,” he said. “We’ll have 10 play drives on offense and defense and it will be full-contact. It will be good to see how we look against someone different.”
Seeing how his team responds against different formations, King said, will also give him an idea on what adjustments he will need to make before the team takes the field in the fall.
In a sense, King said the game will also serve as a job interview for some players.
“We’ll be able to rotate a lot of guys in at a lot of positions,” he said. That’s something we can always do with (Fort Dale). We always try to get a lot of different units on the field and see what we have.
“A lot of players will have plenty of opportunities to prove their worth.”
