As the pressure of the tournament grows in the 83rd annual Selma County Club Men’s Invitational, scores do too.

John Barnett IV followed his opening day 4-under (67) with a 2-over (73) to end the day with the lead at 2-under, one shot ahead of Paul Garner and Will Pearce.

The wind howled on day two and the weather cooled off causing balls to move a little differently on Saturday.

Competitors were paired by rankings Saturday.

The shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. was third, fourth and fifth flight players and followed at 1 p.m. by the championship flight and first flight.

Robert Nelson was able to push his way up the leader board into fourth place Saturday with a 2-under (69), the best of the afternoon groupings.

“It’s been a busy day so far,” SCC golf pro Tommy Burns said early Saturday. “The leaders are out there right now, but we have been going since early this morning.”

In the second flight, Kevin Terrell shot an even-par (71) on Saturday, two shots better than Dana Amberson.

The afternoon groupings had to deal with darkening clouds, but the rain held off allowing the tournament to continue without any delay, much like Friday when the expected severe weather did not come in until late at night.

“We have been keeping a close eye on the radar all day, but there hasn’t been anything really in it,” Burns said.

The three-day event will conclude Sunday at the country club with another shotgun start format.

The third, fourth and fifth flights will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The championship and first flight will begin at 1 p.m.
