Man shot at Water Avenue party

Those attending a party on the 4000 block of Water Avenue late Saturday night had quite a shock around midnight as shots rang out just outside the building.
The result was one man injured and another corralled by security. Moments later, Selma Police arrived and took 28-year-old Curtis Johnson into custody in connection with shooting a fellow partygoer in the hand.
“Right now we are still investigating the events surrounding the shooting, but the suspect has denied having anything to do with the shooting,” Selma Police Lt. Johnny King said Monday. “But, the victim did clearly identify Mr. Johnson as the one who shot him.”
The victim was shot in the hand and was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center and later transported to Baptist South in Montgomery. The male victim’s condition was not available.
King said police have interviewed those in attendance at the party and that they are continuing to search for the suspected weapon involved. King did say a handgun was the weapon involved in the shooting although the caliber of the handgun was not known.
Police charged Johnson with first-degree assault and he was placed in the Dallas County Jail without bond until Monday when he faced District Judge Bob Armstrong.
In Monday’s bond hearing, Armstrong placed a $500,000 bond on Curtis.
As of Monday afternoon, King said Johnson was still in custody at the jail.
King said police were pleased with the quick action of security personnel at the party, who held Johnson until police could arrive.
“That’s exactly the kind of support and help we are looking for,” King said. “They did a great job and we truly appreciate their help in this case.”
