Saturday in Lowndes County, young people from all over the region are invited to try their hand at angling.

The U.S. Corps of Engineers Alabama River Lakes division and Alabama Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries will host its 17th annual Kids Catfish Rodeo at the pond of the Lowndes County Wildlife Management Area in White Hall.

The tournament, which will run from 7:30 to 11 a.m., is designed to let children who might not get to hit the water have a chance to land a trophy catfish, Park Manager Frank McIntosh said.

“It’s a national fishing day, and it is good because it lets kids who might not get to fish a lot do so in a good location,” he said. “It’s just a good time for everyone.”

Though the tournament is designed to be fun, there are a few rules. Each child must be accompanied by an adult and should bring their own poles and bait.

There will be loaner poles available, but participants should try to secure their own in case the loaners run out.

Some suggested baits are hot dogs, worms, crawfish, cut-baits or a number of store-bought baits designed for catfish.

McIntosh said refreshments will be served during the tournament, and anglers 15 and under are allowed to fish.

The tournament is open to the public.

To get to the rodeo from Selma, take Highway 80 East to County Road 23 North in White Hall.

Make a left turn onto County Road 40 and follow the signs to the pond, which lead to Henderson Road.

Turn right onto Henderson Road and the signs will lead directly to the pond.
