VALLEY GRANDE — Three Valley Grande residents have put in their bid for consideration for the vacant council seat left behind by the death of Marie Middlebrooks less than two months ago.
Gene Hisel, Aubrey Smitherman and Lynetta Hicks are the qualified candidates who intend to pursue the seat.
In a previous interview with the Times-Journal,Valley Grande Mayor Tom Lee said the voting process must be done right.
“It’s important for us to know a person’s concept and vision for the city, which should determine our vote,” Lee said. “I think the candidates should present themselves in an open meeting.”
The three candidates submitted their letters of intent with outlines of qualifications for consideration to the city clerk before May 31.
In the event that the vacancy is still not filled within 60 days, members of the council can submit a name to the governor for appointment. An official appointment will be made by a minimum of three votes from the council before July 1.
The consideration of candidates will not be on the agenda at Monday’s scheduled council meeting.
Instead, Dollar General’s plans to request an off-premises beer and wine license will be discussed.
