Selma Riders raising funds for Landon

Selma bikers will rev up their engines for a good cause July 16 as they try to help a Selma family with their growing medical bills.

The ride, which is sponsored by the Selma Riders and begins at 8:30 a.m., will benefit Landon Bishop, who recently recieved a kidney transplant.

Bishop’s grandmother, Cheri Sexton, said Landon had been at the Ronald McDonald House since December prior to receiving the kidney when doctors discovered his need.

“He was rushed to Children’s Hospital where they found out how urgent his needs were,” she said.

“It was a total surprise.”

A biopsy determined that both of Landon’s kidneys were damaged beyond repair, Sexton said.

“There was not even enough there for a tissue sample,” she said.

Fortunately, after screening the family for a match, Sexton said all of his immediate family members were approved.

His father, Nick, was the donor, however, Landon will have to stay in Birmingham for another 100 days following the surgery.

Even after he is released, Sexton said he will remain on medication and the price of transport to and from doctor’s appointments will be expensive.

The ride will cost $20 per bike and $10 per passenger and will begin at Crossroads Exxon.

The ride will finish at mile 6 at about noon and music, food and non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided for the riders.

Pre-registration is not required for the ride. All proceeds will be placed directly into a bank account set up for Landon’s medical bills.

All riders are welcome.

Non-motorcycles and their vehicles are welcome at the finish line to show up and help support Landon and his family.

“We are just trying to get as much support as we can,” Sexton said.
