Tournament helps city showcase talents

Sports have always been the great equalizer for cities, states and regions in the United States.

Regardless of which area had the most businesses, best jobs, or the most resources, when teams from different areas take the field, pride is on the line.

One team will win, and one team will lose. It’s just that simple.

Lately, Selma has been sewing the two worlds together by using sports as a springboard to an improved economy.

For months, we knew the local economy would receive a boost from the upcoming baseball tournaments, and they have not disappointed. Restaurants and hotels have been crowded with families and teams who have made the trip to Selma.

It has become tough to get a table at some of our favorite lunch spots, and no one is complaining. We are perfectly happy to stand in line and listen to the sweet music of the cash registers. More of the same is on the way this week with the Dixie Major state championships at Bloch Park.

The winning streak continued this week with the announcement that the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A, 2A and 3A track meets will be held at Memorial Stadium.

Those who attended the Alabama Independent School Association track meet in 2011 will tell you, the stadium was flooded with athletes, coaches and parents. Even the teams that didn’t stay in town overnight flooded the restaurants.

Though we don’t know exactly how big the impact of the AHSAA meet will be, there is no doubt it will be a huge shot in the arm for Selma and Dallas County.

Traditionally, the greatest sports stories of economically challenged areas revolve around athletes using their skills to get out.

Selma, however, is using athletics as a way to draw people in.

Certainly bringing in a baseball tournament or track meet isn’t the same as landing a major industry, but it is a start.

The more visitors we can draw into Selma, the better.

The more hospitality we can show them, the better.

Selma is on a winning streak when it comes to bringing in positive events. It’s up to everyone to show their support and keep the ball rolling.
