Legion set for annual Fundraiser

American Legion Post 20 in Selma has launched its Boston Butt sale to satisfy the public’s appetite and Dallas County students’ thirst for knowledge.
The sale, which is already underway, is one of the post’s largest fundraisers, commander Jesse Sanchez said.
“This is a fundraiser where the proceeds go to our youth programs such as the Oratorical Contest, Boys State Scholarships and contributions to our veterans who are hospitalized.”
Past commander Bill Campbell said they usually sell 30 Boston Butts, which are provided by Hancock’s Barbecue. But, he said, they can meet larger orders.
“We can always get more,” he said.
The Boston Butts are $25 each and can be ordered by calling 872-6610 or 872-2303.
They will be available for pickup July 22, but Sanchez said the post would make arrangements to deliver them.
In addition to helping students attend college and Boys State, Sanchez said money raised through fundraisers also allows the American Legion to supply new flags for people when their current banner has become tattered, torn and faded.
“Most of us travel throughout the city and we see Old Glory flying and a lot of times a pseudo-pride in our flag leads us to fly it long after it should be retired,” he said. “We as the American Legion make ourselves available to supply these flags to those that are in need of one.”
Sanchez said fundraisers like the Boston Butt sale give the Legion the capability to help the community.
“These funds afford us the opportunity to do what we need to do,” he said.
Sanchez also encouraged those who are not currently members of Post 20 to drop by for a meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 6:15 p.m.
“There are a lot of people who pay dues to the state or national Legion and they don’t realize we are here,” he said. “We would love to have them drop by or join.”
