CAMDEN — A Wilcox County Grand Jury has issued an indictment against a former Alabama state legislator and high school principal.

Tuesday, the Grand Jury handed down an indictment against former state representative and Wilcox-Central High School principal James Thomas of first-degree sexual abuse and a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19.

According to District Attorney Michael Jackson, Thomas will be arraigned in Wilcox County Circuit court in a “couple of months.”

Last November, Thomas was arrested by Wilcox Sheriff’s Department officials and charged with first-degree sexual abuse.

The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by a student at Wilcox-Central High School, where Thomas served as principal.

After attending a Wilcox-Central basketball game against Selma in mid-December, Thomas was again arrested for violating the terms of his bond, Jackson said at the time.

In addition to working as principal of the 669-student Wilcox-Central High School in Camden, Thomas had served nearly 28 years as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from District 69, which includes portions of Autauga, Dallas, Lowndes and Wilcox counties.
