Saturday proved to be a tragic day on local highways as two area residents were killed in separate, single-vehicle accidents.

Alabama State Troopers are continuing to investigate the cause of a devastating accident on U.S. Hwy. 80 that claimed the life of area businessman, 50-year-old Kay Latham Holbrook.

The Marion Junction resident was killed in the accident that saw his 1999 Mack truck collide with a bridge guardrail and overturn. The wreck spread debris across much of the two, eastbound lanes and tied up traffic in the area for hours.

The Dallas County Coroner’s office confirmed a fatality in the accident Saturday afternoon, but Troopers did not release Holbrook’s name until shortly before midnight Saturday.

The crash occurred at 9 a.m., eight miles east of Selma, near Southside High School.

Burial services for Holbrook were held Monday at New Live Oak Cemetery after a Monday morning service at Meadowview Christian Church.

Holbrook is survived by his wife, Belinda; father, Claude Holbrook Sr., daughters, Jessica Foley, Sherrer Durden and Ruth Haygood; sons, Donald Holbrook and John Holbrook; two grandchildren; two sisters, four brothers and a number of nieces and nephews.

In a separate accident, Uniontown native Shantale Monique Butler, 22, was killed, when her 2008 Mitsubishi Galant left the roadway and struck a tree.

The crash occurred at around 6 a.m. six miles north of Thomaston.

According to Alabama State Troopers, Butler was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
