A Dallas County jury needed less than an hour to convict Timothy Gullett Wednesday in connection with a 2009 shooting on Washington Street.
Gullett, who was charged with assault first degree, faces 20 years to life. After a pre-sentence investigation he will appear before Circuit Judge Jack Meigs in a few months.
District Attorney Michael Jackson said he hopes to continue to put violent criminals behind bars.
“We are going to keep cracking down on these violent offenders,” Jackson said following the verdict.
The family of the victim, Darrell Mitchell, said they are relieved to know Gullett will face extensive prison time.
“Justice has been served,” family member Gloria Smith said. “We can sleep at night.”
According to police reports, officers responded to a May 20, 2009 call at 704 Washington St. in reference to a shooting.
On the scene, officers learned Mitchell and Gullett had an altercation the night before and the situation escalated the next day.
According to witnesses, Gullett and Mitchell started arguing. Gullett then went into his residence, came back outside and began firing at Mitchell.
Mitchell was struck several times in the face by the shotgun blasts.
While trying to drive himself to the hospital, Mitchell wrecked his vehicle at 605 Medical Center Parkway.
Officers and other emergency personnel responded to the scene and Mitchell was transported to the hospital.
