Two juveniles were taken into custody early Sunday morning in connection to a number of robberies in Selma.

Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said a 17-year-old and 13-year-old were taken into custody in connection with a robbery at the Ramada Inn that happened at about 9 p.m. Saturday and another incident at Mark’s Mart Aug. 13.

The two were charged as adults, and as of Monday, had no bond.

“Right now we are holding the 17-year-old with no bond and the 13-year-old is at the detention center,” he said. “We are also investigating their roles in other robberies.”

Selma Police Department Lt. Johny King, who is working the case, said after the pair pulled a gun on a customer at the Ramada Inn, officers were on the lookout for their vehicle. After a description was given things started to fall into place.

“They pulled into a station at around 3:27 Sunday morning and officers were gassing up,” he said. “They recognized the car and when they approached the vehicle the driver got really nervous and started sweating.”

When officers Chelsie Chamberlain and Jonathan McGuire searched the car they recovered a pistol and found marijuana.

After both were transported back to the station, King said victims were notified and able to give a positive identification on the two.

King said both have been charged with robbery first and second-degree robbery. The robbery at Mark’s Mart did not involve a firearm, he said.

The 17-year-old faces drug charges and the juvenile faces a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

King praised the work of the officers for keeping their eyes open.

“They really did a great job of identifying them and detaining them,” he said. “They really did a great job, and they deserve some praise. It certainly makes the streets a lot safer.”

The case is still under investigation.
