For Selma Police Officer Christopher Harris was indicted Monday on charges of rape second degree by a Dallas County grand jury.
Harris will now wait for arraignment, which District Attorney Michael Jackson said could come by November.
“He should be arraigned in Dallas County Circuit Court in a couple of months,” Jackson said.
Harris was a four-year veteran of the Selma Police Department at the time of his arrest in January. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail and released on a $50,000 bond.
Jackson said the charge of second-degree rape involves the rape of a person less than 16 years old, but older than 12.
The arrest of Harris, Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said, was the result of an investigation conducted by his department.
The department also asked for, and received help from the Alabama Bureau of Investigations.
A rape second-degree charge is a class B felony, which carries with it a penalty of two to 20 years, if Harris is convicted.
