Dump site should be cleaned up

There are plenty of unanswered questions surrounding money from the city of Selma’s recent bond issue that was allocated, not allocated, spent or not spent in relation to the city of Selma’s landfill. But, it appears the idea behind using a piece of city-owned property located in the county as a temporary landfill may have been a decision that should have been reconsidered, or at the very least a plan that should have been discussed more prior to being implemented.
The idea was for the property to be used temporarily for brush, tree limbs and leaves. Instead, what happened was debris dumped on the property located near the Dallas County Sports complex off Highway 219 has made this site a full-fledged landfill.
Household garbage is mixed with toilets, construction debris and old gasoline cans.
Selma Mayor George Evans may have had the right idea in finding a location to temporarily deposit trash until a solution can be implemented for the city’s permanent landfill, but someone down the line has let him down, let the city down and let the residents of Selma down by not notifying him of what was actually being dumped near a place where children play.
Certainly now that Evans and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management is aware of the situation, we’re confident it will be addressed and brought into compliance quickly. The citizens of Selma and Dallas County deserve and expect no less.
