Well, the college football season is officially here ending months and months of anticipation and hype.

Many of us counted the days until we could load up the car or recreational vehicle and head to Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Troy and other locations and spend a day grilling, spending time with friends and watching the game in person.

There really is nothing like spending a day at the stadium.

It is my hope that people will do the same here in Selma at some point this season.

Concordia College will offer three opportunities for football fans to come out and see local talent in action this season. The Hornets host the University of New Orleans on Sept. 17, Point College Sept. 24 and Texas College for homecoming Oct. 8.

Many of the players on Concordia’s football team are from Selma and the Black Belt. Home games provide an excellent opportunity to see players we followed during their high school careers playing at the next level.

Plus, the area outside Memorial Stadium provides a great place to tailgate. There is wide-open space around Bloch Park and the walking trail, a covered pavilion and a playground for children.

There is plenty of space for grillers and traditional tailgating games like horseshoes and bags.

Since the games kick off at 5 p.m., some could also tailgate from their boats with a day on the river before returning to the Selma landing and heading to the game. Selma tailgating, like the Hornet football team, has a lot of potential.

All they need is a little support. Any football player will tell you they play a little bit harder when the stands are filled with cheering fans. It would mean a lot to the Hornet football team to see lots of yellow and green when they take the field.

If you find yourself with time on your hands during any of the three Saturdays the Hornets will be in town, head over to Memorial Stadium and take in a game. You might be pleasantly surprised by what you see.
