Many people came to the Central Alabama Fair for many different reasons, but all shared a sense of excitement for the afternoon’s activities.

Hundreds entered the gates on opening night — many were lined up before the gates were even open — to catch their first glimpse of the 55th version of the fair. Selma native Evelyn Cox, who was attending her 10th fair, said she enjoys the fair because she gets to meet new people while manning her booth.

“I love greeting people, seeing people and greeting them,” she said. “I always have my church booth here, Joy Baptist, and it is always a lot of fun.”

Others, like Jennifer Lester, said they enjoy the snacks and décor.

“I like the cozy dogs and all the rides and lights,” she said.

For many, like Monica Grindle, the fair is also a place to meet up with acquaintances she hasn’t seen in a while.

“I like seeing all my friends,” she said.

The large numbers, Lion’s Club member Scott Haskell said, are always a welcome sight. This year, he said, the crowds did not disappoint.

“So far it has been great,” he said. “We’ve had a good turnout and the first pageant will be great. Our exhibit hall is full and we are full as far as our animals are concerned. It’s been a good night.”

Opening night, Haskell said, always creates a great deal of buzz.

“The first night is always exciting and a lot of people look forward to it,” he said. “It’s armband night, and that always draws a good crowd.”

The fair will continue through Sunday with pageants, rides and games.
