ORRVILLE — The Keith High School band continued its drive to lobby public support for new instruments Monday when Parent Teacher Organization chairman Maggie Drake Peterson came before the Dallas County Commission.

The band, Peterson said, has been using old, worn-out instruments, and because many are no longer usable, the school is now running low.

“We have many children who are interested in being in the band, but most of the instruments at Keith High School are old, or can’t be repaired,” she said. “We are asking for used, repairable instrument you might even have in your closet.”

In smaller schools, Peterson said it is especially important for students to have access to the arts.

“Children who are musically inclined need an opportunity to participate in an activity like this,” she said. “Because of the limited income of the parents, many of them cannot afford to purchase or rent instruments. We are asking people to dig deep into their heart and their hat to help these children.”

Peterson urged anyone who wants to help to send donations to Keith High School at 1166 County Road 115 in Orrville.

Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard said though the commission is not able to make a donation because of state laws, he hopes others in the community will provide assistance.

“Keith has a long history of their band and band performance and it is a shame to look at some of the equipment that they are still trying to use,” he said. “I wish there was a way it was legal for the Dallas County Commission to donate to this cause, but there is not.”

Hopefully, Peterson said, the public will respond.

“Let’s make this a community appeal and give them what they need,” she said. “Let’s help our children and put our words to actions.”
