Author Lewis Carroll is synonymous with penning the story-turned-movie classic Alice in Wonderland, but few know about his work Jabbawockeez, a nonsense poem about a fantastical monster. This November, a local organization will bring the mythical tale of valor to life.
The Selma Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will host a Jabberwock program for ages 7 to 11 Sunday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. inside the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center. Based on the mythical character that urged its kingdom to put on a show each year, young people will raise money to become the organization’s next Little Miss and Little Master Jabberwock. First and second runners-up will also be announced.
Program co-chair Frances Bumbrey said the event has become a tradition for the Delta’s combining talent and fundraising. Students, Bumbrey said, come from all over Selma to participate.
“This is a national activity that’s done throughout, with different chapters,” Bumbrey said. “The original idea was first conceived in 1925 in Boston as an innovative way of raising money for scholarships and public service.
Members decided to do a variety show with dances and skits; Members of the community who want to participate can.”
Program chair Beverly Blackmon said the program is very important for young people.
“It teaches them to be more outgoing at an early age and to interact with their fellow peers,” Blackmon said. “We’ve done this for a number of years (and) it has been a success.”
Blackmon said there is still time for interested young people to participate. Call 872-6555 for more information. The event is free and open to the public.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1913 at Howard University. With a little more than 250,000 members, the nonprofit organization raises money for scholarship and community service projects.
