A guard at the Dallas County Jail will now have a view from the other side of the bars after allegedly funneling contraband to inmates.
According to investigators, Washington Reese, 24, was taken into custody Monday morning when it was discovered he was funneling drugs and liquor to inmates.
Reese, who had been employed at the jail for 15 months, aroused suspicion from some of his coworkers, which led to an investigation.
“We had had a few complaints on him, and conducted the investigation,” Dallas County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. John Hatfield said. “We were able to get him with the contraband.”
Authorities, Hatfield said, arrived at the jail at around 10 a.m. and when Reese showed up for work at 11 a.m., they were able to catch him with the contraband.
“We got some marijuana out of a book bag he was carrying,” he said.
Reese had been hiding marijuana and cigars in potato chip bags and had poured gin into a sprite bottle.
Altogether, the department seized $403 in contraband.
Reese has been charged with promoting prison contraband second degree and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.
The investigation began, Hatfield said, with those at the jail making a quick report when they felt something wasn’t right.
“We had talked to some of the people at the jail and they said they suspected he was bringing in contraband,” he said. “We actually started doing surveillance from there.”
Reese was expected to appear for a bond hearing late Monday afternoon.
