While Christmas is the season of giving, sometimes the recipient wants to give back or return their gift.

Returning gifts or products is a common occurrence, but it often increases during gift-giving season for any number of reasons.

Local retailers know this and have return policies in place for just the situation.

“Our return policy is within 90 days with a receipt,” said Lisa McFee, store manager at J.C. Penny in the Selma Mall. “If someone’s shopping and they get a receipt it has an expiration date on the receipt. That guarantees you the price that was paid for the item.”

McFee said those who may have lost or misplaced their receipt also still have options if they’re looking to return a gift or purchase.

“If someone returns an item without a receipt, they’re going to get the 30-day low price,” McFee said. “If it’s been on sale or it’s now a clearance item, that’s what they’re going to get.”

Other local retailers such as Belk in the Selma Mall also have policies for returns.

Returns with receipts can be brought back within 180 days of purchase and Belk will refund the full purchase price to the customer’s original form of payment (cash, card, etc.).

For returns without a receipt or returned after 180 days of purchase, Belk will refund the lowest sale price offered in the last 30 days, credited to the customer’s Belk Charge or a Belk Gift Card.

Belk also accepts returns on fine jewelry within 90 days of purchase with a receipt.

Belk also has receipt look-up for customers who have misplaced a receipt.

Goody’s in the Selma Mall is also offering a special return policy for gifts.

“Right now we are giving out the gift receipts,” said Charlotte Fitts, store manager at Goody’s. “If they come in with a Christmas present (to return) they get their cash back or credit card or however they paid for it. We always want to make our customers satisfied.”

Fitts said that gift receipts are not only available for the Christmas season.

“We offer gift receipts all year round,” Fitts said. “Whenever they’re not satisfied they are welcome to bring it back in and get something else or get their money back.”
