Less than a week after falling to the Clarke Prep Lady Gators at home, the Morgan Academy Senators got a little revenge, as they defeated Clarke Prep 39-27 at home on Tuesday.
Morgan head girl’s basketball coach Rand Smith said the Senators (2-11) were much improved from last week’s loss to the Lady Gators in the Morgan Pepsi Classic Tournament.
“I thought, compared to last week, it was a night and day difference,” Smith said. “We rebounded, we boxed out, we played defense, we helped on defense, and we didn’t turn the ball over. We spread it out and a lot of people made some big shots tonight. It was definitely an improvement.”
The Senators took a 17-15 lead into halftime and extended that lead to 24-17 midway through the third quarter, but Clarke Prep fought back as Libby Harrigan converted a hoop and the foul to make the score 24-20 with 3:10 left in the quarter.
Taylor Bradford hit a mid-range jumper for the Lady Gators to make it 24-22.
Morgan’s Kendall Veach hit one of two free throws to extend the Senator’s lead to 25-22, but Harrigan scored on the next possession to make it a 25-24 game going into the final quarter.
Harrigan tied the game at 25-25 on a free throw early in the fourth, but Morgan started to pull away, as Lauren Yeldell nailed a jumper to give the Senators a 27-25 lead with 7:27 left in the game.
Yeldell’s shot sparked Morgan, as the Senators outscored the Lady Gators 14-2 in the final quarter, which included a three pointer tfrom Casey Baggett and baskets by Katherine Averitt and Laigan Godwin. Yeldell and Godwin led the Senators with 8 points each.
