Concordia continues progress

Adding a fraternity to a college campus does not seem like a huge event for someone who is not a student at Concordia College.

But, for the young men who made this a reality, and for those who are considering Concordia for their four-year degrees, the addition of a Greek organization can be huge.

Phi Beta Sigma will become the first Greek organization in the entire Concordia College system. Though there is a certain stigma that can be attached to fraternities, their intended purpose is shaping young men and serving the community.

Judging by the young men who attended Tuesday’s Selma City Council meeting, there is no doubt they intend to do just that.

The group already announced it plans to adopt Martin Luther King Street. It will be exciting to see what Phi Beta Sigma brings to one of the most historic sections of our city.

Allowing a Greek organization to be a part of Concordia College sends a bold message to prospective students.

The college often stresses at public events that one of the main goals is to bring the total college experience to Selma.

Greek organizations are just one more piece of the puzzle.

Those who have watched Concordia grow for the past 10 years have to be impressed. This college has gone from a small four-year institution off Broad Street to a strong academic institution that offers almost everything a student would want.

A competitive football team, a growing basketball program, an award-winning ROTC program and now, a Greek organization, show the school’s dedication to its students.

The administrators and students at Concodia deserve a pat on the back for their forward-thinking approach. They truly believe in putting the students first.
