Leaders should take more walks

Saturday, I had the good fortune to meet a young man named Andrew Forsthoefel who is walking across the country.
He began his journey in Philadelphia and plans to make his way to New Orleans before heading to California.
When I asked him why he was walking, he gave the best answer he possibly could. He just wanted to slow down and get a new perspective on things.
Andrew pointed out that it is hard to miss interesting things when a person is walking instead of driving. Rather than watching the world zoom by, you can take time to smell the roses.
Andrew also said walking gives him time to meet interesting people and hear their stories. I feel certain by listening to different people in different places he will receive an education just as valuable as his recently completed college studies.
Andrew, at the age of 23, has already figured something out that we still struggle with in Selma. You have to take time to listen to people before you can form an opinion of what they stand for.
In our city, there is a “if you’re not for us, you’re against us” attitude on many issues. If the two parties would simply sit down and discuss their differing opinions without fireworks, Selma could accomplish so much more.
Agreeing with someone you would generally disagree with does not always amount to “giving in.” Sometimes it’s best for everyone.
When groups work together, good things happen. It’s evident with the new movie theater, it’s evident with the new terminal building and it’s evident with the growth at our local colleges.
I’m sure the boards for these groups have their differences behind the scenes. Sometimes there could even be heated arguments.
But, in the end, they come together to do what is best for the city, county and students.
Local leaders and citizens of Selma should do a little more walking and a lot less running.
By running with our preconceived ideas of how things should be and who is working against who we often miss what is best for everyone.
