Family reflects on struggles

Abernathy and his wife stopped at one point on a tour of the center to indicate a photo of his uncle standing next to Dr. King as President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law.
Abernathy said the Lowndes Interpretive Center gives great insight into the past.
“I think it’s excellent. We must have documentation of our past,” Abernathy said. “People need to know from where we’ve come. And it’s significant that we have to document and we have to remember what price was paid for the freedom of voting that we have now, that it didn’t come just because someone gave it to us… people died and sacrificed.”

Dr. King was born Jan. 15, 1929 and assassinated on April 4, 1968. Ralph David Abernathy died April 17, 1990.
