Y building saved?

As early as last Tuesday, it appeared the building’s future was bleak, as Bolton had asked the council to grant his appeal of an earlier Historical Commission decision, preventing him from demolishing the building.

The council, who appeared to be headed toward a vote, postponed their vote until this week’s meeting, giving groups interested in saving the structure just a little more time.

It was the extra time that proved beneficial.

“We were able to get some emergency funding from the Alabama Trust that will go to help stabilize the building, giving us the ability to purchase this building and begin work,” Bennett said. “We are going to pull off our current refurbishing work on Tremont School and focus our efforts on the YMCA.”

Bennett said the full scope of the stabilization work is not yet known, but her group is hoping to have structural engineers on site immediately after the close of the purchase.

Bennett said she and Bolton were able to negotiate a price on the purchase on the building, but refused to provide the amount. The purchase price, once the purchase is completed, will be among the details included in the deed filings in the Dallas County Courthouse in the coming weeks.

When contacted Tuesday evening, Bolton — who was not in attendance at the council meeting — refused to comment on the sale or any other action involving the YMCA building.
