The response from last year’s Pet Idol was more than he could have ever expected, Times-Journal circulation director Shane Gaut said.

“The Pet Idol contest exceeded expectations last year, which enabled us to put thousands of newspapers in students’ hands all across the county during the 2011-2012 school year and even donate $1,000 to the Selma Animal Shelter,” he said.

“It’s a fun and engaging fundraiser for the community to get involved with and I believe this year’s results will be even better. People were already asking me how to enter their pets before Christmas.”

Qualifying entries for the 2012 Pet Idol will appear in The Selma Times-Journal Sunday, Feb. 15. Votes, which are 25-cents each will be collected through Friday, Feb. 17. All money raised will be donated to the Newspapers in Education program.

After qualifying, there will be two more rounds of competition. Round two will see photos of the top 50 percent printed in the Sunday, Feb. 19 version of The Selma Times-Journal and votes will again open through Friday, March 2.
