The No. 10 Selma Lady Saints took care of business on senior night, as they defeated the Central-Hayneville Lions 71-27 Tuesday at Wallace Community College-Selma. Anthony Harris, head coach of the Lady Saints (22-3, 6-0, ranked No. 10 in class 5A), said the Lady Saints’ seniors played on their home floor like it was truly their last time, even though they’ll return to that same floor to host the area tournament on Thursday.
“We played hard because it was senior night, they (Selma seniors) got three quarters tonight and they did a pretty good job. We didn’t have but nine turnovers,” Harris said. “Free throws, we went 5-15, so we have to come back and work on that because, down the stretch, free throws have got to be made. Otherwise, about 8 to 10 on that first group played good basketball and we’re going to take that into the area tournament on Thursday. We’re not going to sit back and wait, we’re going to go back and work.”
The Lady Saints scored a two-point basket to open the game, but Central’s Kendreuna McPherson answered with a 3-pointer to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.
However, that’s the only time the Lions (12-8, 6-0) tasted the lead, as Selma outscored them 21-5 in the first quarter, including 7 points from senior Jameneshia Caver and six points from senior Jonishia Jackson.
Selma pushed the lead to 38-19 at halftime and outscored the Lions 17-3 in third quarter to put the game well out of reach.
