Jubilee co-founder and coordinator Sam Walker said so far, everything is looking up.
“We’ve been working on this since last summer,” Walker said. “Each one of the events has committees that work on events and the coordinators, Attorney Rose Sanders, myself and others, oversees the committees,” Walker said. “The vendors are still coming in … we have 50 venders so far.”
With more than 40 scheduled events, Walker said there’s plenty to get involved in.
“There will be various type of food items (and) things ranging from basic arts and crafts to African designs, arts and clothing (from vendors),” Walker said. “The Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson and members of Congress will be there. March 4-9, we’ll be reenacting the Selma-to-Montgomery March and the Rev. Al Sharpton is one of the march leaders.”
Sponsored by the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement, Wallace Community College-Selma, the city of Selma and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the event will kick off inside Tabernacle Baptist Church and will feature the original Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC, Freedom Singers. A series of workshops about immigration, healthcare, worker’s rights and various other topics, will also take place.
“Seven new workshops have been added to this year’s schedule,” Walker said. “There will be an educational summit, worker’s rights and immigration, (a) legal symposium and (about) what’s going on in Haiti.”
Walker also said the public can enjoy performances from both the Gospel and secular music arenas during Jubilee’s music festival.
“Headlining the Gospel stage is Keith “Wonderboy” Johnson and Paul Porter, and on the non-Gospel stage, in Blues — Lenny Williams and Wilson Meadows. (The) R&B stage will be Ruben Studdard; we’re still finalizing the schedule for Hip Hop artists.”
With nearly 30,000 attending last year’s event, Walker said organizers expect this year’s event to be an even greater success.
“We’re expecting to exceed last year’s participation,” Walker said.
