The Dallas County Hornets took care of business early as they defeated the Wilcox-Central Jaguars 20-1, 20-2 in a doubleheader at home Monday.
The Hornets (8-0) capitalized off fielding errors and walks by the Jaguars on their way to a dominating 20-1 win in the first game that included a home run by D.J. Stiles.
The Jaguars walked ten batters, and Kevin Simmons and Justin Moreland also registered hits for the Hornets.
The big lead enabled the Hornets to get some experience for their younger players, and Dallas County went on to start the junior varsity players in the second game and won 20-2.
Willie Moore, head coach of the Hornets, said games like the ones on Monday create an opportunity to develop some depth moving forward this season.
“We’re just trying to build depth because we’re a pretty senior-laden team,” Moore said. “We’ve also got a lot of first-year players and although it’s a varsity game, we played our JV (junior varsity) in the second game along with the latter part of the first game. It was good to get them in the game early.”
Moore said the Hornets did a great job of hitting the ball, and that they will look to continue improving defensively the remainder of the season.
“We just need to work on being sound defensively,” Moore said. “Game like tonight, defense don’t get worked that much because they (Wilcox) struggled hitting the baseball, but I knew going in that we should fair pretty well hitting the ball and fielding the ball against them.”
The Hornets will take the field again Thursday when they’ll play Isabella High School at home, with the junior varsity teams playing at 4 p.m. and the varsity playing at 5 p.m.
