Hundreds flock to Chili Cookoff

It was fitting the inaugural Alabama River Chili Cookoff was held in such a place as Water Avenue. With dozens of teams handing out sometimes spicy cups of homemade chili, water was exactly what some needed.
The first-year event, organized by Leadership Selma-Dallas county, went to support the Salvation Army in Selma and Dallas County, and raised thousands of dollars for their operations.
“We have been absolutely amazed by the response we’ve seen here tonight,” event co-chairperson Christie Thomas said. “This really has surpassed any of our expectations.”
The cookoff, which organizers admitted was managed by a very “loose” set of rules, was put together in coordination with the city of Selma.
“This is really fantastic the crowd that is here tonight and enjoying downtown Selma,” Selma Mayor George Evans said. “I have already had a number of folks come up to me and say they might be interested in bringing events downtown.”
The teams, which consisted of a number of area businesses and organizations, were competing for three trophies, which included the one for best judged chili, most spirited team and fan favorite.
Taking the title of best judged chili was the team representing Henry Brick Company, while the Marion Bank and Trust team took the title of fan favorite. The team from International Paper was named the most spirited team.
“The reaction by the teams and the guests showed we had a good plan, good project,” co-chairperson Jessica Hope said. “Needless to say, we will be having a second annual cookoff next year.”
The event raised money by way of admission charges, sponsorships, team entry fees, concession sales and sales of event t-shirts.
Details on just how much money was raised for the Salvation Army were not known as of deadline.
