After winning the third United States Collegiate Athletic Association basketball national championship in school history, the Concordia College Lady Hornets will be honored by the student body, faculty and the city of Selma Monday.

Concordia College will hold a celebration for it’s women’s basketball team after it won the USCAA national championship 65-44 against Selma University in Uniontown, Pa. on March 10, and will also celebrate the Concordia football team, which finished no. 1 in Dr. Cavil’s poll for independent programs among Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Stanford Angion, vice president of student services at Concordia, said the celebration will serve as a thank you to the players for their hard work.

“We’re very excited to have the national championship for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association … and that is quite a feat for us,” Angion said. “We want to show our appreciation to the team and each member by having a ceremony on Monday that will give us the opportunity to publicly tell them thank you for their service and for their sportsmanship.”

The celebration will take place Monday, March 26 starting at Concordia’s Jenkins Center at 10 a.m.

Angion said the celebration will include music, food, games and Selma Mayor George Evans and Selma City Councilmen will be in attendance for a ceremony that will be followed by a parade.

“We plan to give them each a certificate and they will be receiving championship rings as well,” Angion said. “After the president (of Concordia, Dr. Tilahun Mendedo) gives an address to the group, we will have a parade where we will leave from our main campus on the east and go along Franklin, First Avenue and Broad Street, and enter back in at our west campus and we will go to the open field out there and celebrate the victory with fun, games and food.”

Concordia College ROTC will lead the parade, as Concordia’s band, cheerleaders, football team, women’s basketball team, students, faculty and various clubs from the college will march.

The Selma High School Band will also be in the parade.

The event is open to the public.
