Last Tuesday, the members of the Concordia College-Selma Lady Hornets basketball team were honored by Selma Mayor George Evans and the Selma City Council for their recent national championship.

On Wednesday, most of the team was suspended for what school officials called an “unauthorized on-campus party in their cottage.”

“The party was discovered by on duty Concordia security personnel,” said Dr. Stanford E. Angion, Concordia’s vice president of student services, in an email response to a Times-Journal inquiry. “Although this unfortunate incident has occurred, we remain very proud of our Lady Hornets and their outstanding achievements.”

The players, who were not individually identified, received a one-week out-of-school suspension for sponsoring the party.

The Lady Hornets spent most of last week being honored for their USCAA National Championship, a title they won on March 10 in Uniontown, Pa. by defeating the Selma University Lady Bulldogs.

The school did not provide a comment from head basketball coach Kimberly Anderson.
