For two area men, coming to a stop at a downtown Selma stoplight wasn’t the problem. Rather, coming to a stop next to two drug unit detectives while smoking a blunt proved to be the ultimate mistake.
According to Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley, drug unit detectives were patrolling in the area of Broad Street Tuesday when stopped at a traffic light in the area of J.L. Chestnut Boulevard and Broad Street.
“As they waited for the light to turn, a Ford Explorer pulled up beside them,” Riley said. “They observed the front passenger of the Explorer with a marijuana blunt in this mouth.”
Riley said the detectives turned on their emergency lights and stopped the Explorer.
The driver of the car was identified as George Hancock. The passenger, who was spotted earlier with the blunt, was identified as Arzie Davis III.
“Mr. Davis was questioned by detectives and turned the blunt over to them,” Riley said. “Through further investigation, two bags of marijuana and one bag of crack cocaine was found in the vehicle, along with a 9 mm handgun.”
Davis and Hancock, who Riley said both had previous criminal convictions, were taken into custody and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and ex-felon in possession of a firearm.
Both were booked and placed in the Dallas County Jail.
